Training within the project “Prison Interventions and HIV Prevention Collaboration”

On February 25-26th, the training for healthcare professionals and representatives of the administration of two correctional colonies took place in Vinnytsia.

The training “Mental and behavioral disorders due to the use of psychoactive substances, treatment and rehabilitation, a modern view. Implementation of integrated treatment programs with the use of substitution maintenance therapy medications at institutions of the State Criminal Executive Service of Ukraine” was held within the joint project of the Health Center of the State Criminal Executive Service of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Institute on Public Health Policy “Prison Interventions and HIV Prevention Collaboration”. 

The training participants, i.e. healthcare professionals and representatives of the administration of the Stryzhavka Correctional Colony No. 81 in Vinnytsia region and Shepetivka Correctional Colony No. 98 in Khmelnytsk region, gained knowledge and skills necessary for monitoring, evaluation and treatment of convicts having mental and behavioral disorders due to the use of opioids with substitution maintenance therapy medications. 

The trainees got acquainted with the international practices of implementing harm reduction programs at the level of penitentiary institutions, including the national legislation in the field of implementing the SMT program in prisons. During the practical classes, the role of each service in ensuring the continuous SMT treatment was determined and management of a person with psychoactive substance addiction was discussed.
